Which crampons fit your boots?

Prices and stock read Nov 4, 2026.

Check two things on your boot, in this order: how stiff the sole is, then whether there's a groove or ledge at the heel and the toe. Those answers decide which crampon styles can stay on your foot.

Answer all three and your result shows up here.

The three styles

Match the stiffness too

Needle Sports rates boots B1 to B3 and crampons C1 to C3. The rule: crampons shouldn't be stiffer than the boot, or they may fall off or hurt your ankle.

Boot ratingWhat it isCrampons it can take
B1Flexible, trekking and hill walkingC1 (flexible)
B2Semi-rigid, mountaineering, easier snow and mixedC1 and C2 (semi-rigid)
B3Fully rigid, mountaineering, ice and mixed at all gradesC1, C2 and C3 (rigid)

Needle Sports calls these simplified guidelines, not strict rules. They also warn that some boots carry a step-in style heel ledge "to look techy" when they aren't. If you can't tell, a strap-on crampon is the safer buy.

The last column applies the rules above. The stores don't state it. Try the crampon on the boot before you rely on it.

One crampon that could be confirmed: Petzl Vasak Leverlock Universal

A 12-point steel crampon with anti-balling plates. Feathered Friends lists it at $209.95, and Backcountry shows a Vasak 12-point at the same price on a Scarpa boot page. Published weights run from about 1 lb 13 oz to 2 lb (822 to 892 g), depending on the front attachment and who is weighing. The version with the universal binding takes both step-in and semi-automatic fitting.

One catch from Needle Sports: the heel is too narrow for wide high-altitude mountain boots. It suggests the Grivel G12 or Air Tech for those. Backcountry's Vasak page said out of stock on Nov 4, 2026.

Black Diamond

Black Diamond's own store listed two strap-on crampons on Nov 4, 2026, the Contact Strap and the Neve Strap, and both were out of stock. The Neve is a 10-point aluminum crampon. Alpine Ascents tells its Rainier students not to bring 10-point or aluminum crampons and asks for 12-point steel with anti-balling plates, so the Neve is a glacier-walking tool, not an ice one. Black Diamond also says the Neve can't ship to California, New York or Colorado because it contains PFAS.
